Sunshading extending usable living space

A fire in the building that housed this preschool caused the organisation operating the service to look for a temporary home during the rebuilding process. The preschool was set up in a church hall with limited shaded outdoor space. The photo above shows work that was carried out to create a large shaded area. By locating it on the edge of the building, the existing, usable outdoor playspace was expanded.

Many of the 185,000 Australians in residential aged care live in poor conditions. A substantial body of research has established the design requirements to best support people with dementia, sensory impairment and other personal constraints common to aged care residents. Yet, few facilities effectively support the basic needs, of residents let alone the more sophisticated social programs offered by innovative providers. The Strategic Improvements Project provides a four step building renovation program.
