Our
courses have encouraged students to learn about social design within
a reflective, studio environment (in particular in aged care). We
have run them in collaboration with the Salvation Army and UnitingCare
Ageing and a key part has been participatory-research. Students
carry out fieldwork in groups to understand the life of a hostel/nursing
home by volunteering in an existing facility. The studio focuses
on students developing consultative and research methods that can
feed most directly into design work. In conjunction with developing
individual designs, each student group produce a “Book
of Design Ideas” as a social brief for their work. This
book is developed through the semester alongside their designs.
Students learn about the specific needs of the buildings, group
collaboration and the professional role and responsibilities of
being an architect.
