Building, Nick worked in collaboration with Ken Costigan in Papua New Guinea on projects that aimed to develop local building traditions, support community skill development and train local tradespeople. The projects were responding to new needs, but integrated traditional built forms, materials, details and construction systems. They included village-based tourism facilities and training centres. Together with the communities we established the needs of these buildings, how best to build them and how to manage the construction process. Much of the work was carried out with materials source within close proximity to the building sites and extensive involvement of unskilled community labour. |
